In the course of my work, I spend a lot of time driving through small towns in the Carolinas. This has resulted in a collection of signs and wonders -- photos of roadside curiosities, thrift shop treasures, small-town police blotter clippings -- which I've begun to assemble here. What's Good is a photo blog of such discoveries.
The name of this blog is inspired by a frequent declaration of my father’s: “You just don’t know what’s good.” This accusation would surface at times when Daddy had inadvertently gone out on a limb and professed his admiration for something -- like Slim Whitman or horehound candy -- which, upon praising it, he suddenly realized might not be universally appreciated. In this way he defended his less explicable loyalties, with mock disgust at the philistines around him. What do you mean the grocery store doesn’t sell fireworks in March? Clearly they don't know what’s good.
The collection is ever expanding, so stop by on your rounds. Your own discoveries are invited too. I may blur out identifying information in a photograph, if it's potentially embarrassing, but would love to add your photos and credit you for them.
